The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.
